Sibley is the county seat of Osceola County, which was established on January 15, 1851. The county was named in honor of Osceola (1804-1838), the Seminole Chief. In 1872, the town of Sibley, named for Henry H. Sibley, the first governor of Minnesota, was selected as the county seat.
