Webster City is the county seat of Hamilton County, which was established on December 22, 1856. Hamilton County was named in honor of Senator William W. Hamilton, who had served as the President of the Iowa Senate from 1856-1857. Originally, the county had been named Risley, but on January 12, 1853, the name was changed to Webster which also absorbed Yell County. On December 22, 1856, Webster County was divided, and the eastern part was named Hamilton. Webster City was designated the county seat of Hamilton County at that time.

Anamosa is the county seat of Jones County, which was established on December 21, 1837. Jones County was named for George Wallace Jones who served as a United States Senator from Iowa from 1848-1859. Anamosa became the third county seat, after Edinburgh and Newport, on June 11, 1847. The town had originally been named Lexington, but was renamed Anamosa (White Fawn) in honor of the daughter of the Winnebago Chief, Nas-i-nus.

Boone is the county seat of Boone County, which was established on January 13, 1846. The county was named for Captain Nathan Boone (1782-1863), the youngest son of Danield Boone who had surveyed the areas of central Iowa between 1830 and 1835. The first county seat was established in Boonesboro in 1856. In 1871, the county seat was moved to Montana, which was renamed Boone.

Centerville is the county seat of Appanoose County, which was established on jFebruary 17, 1843. Appanoose was named in honor of the Chief of the Sac and Fox Tribes who was involved in the peace process after the Black Hawk War. The county seat was originally named Chaldea, which was then changed to Senterville (after Governor Senter of Tennessee), and then changed to Centerville in 1847.

Burlington is the county seat of Des Moines county, which was established on September 6, 1834. The name was taken from the Des Moines River which ran through the original county of Demoine which, along with DeBuque, was one of the two original counties of the state of Iowa. Burlington had been established by 1829, and it became the county seat in 1838.
